John Charles Stebbeds was born in 1880 in Holywell Row (Mildenhall Q4-1880 4A:588) son of David and Ellen STEBBEDS (née LEONARD).

1881 census...Aged 6 months, he was at 18 Holywell Row, with his father David STEBBEDS [36] sawyer; his mother Ellen [27] and his brother Walter [3]. All were born in Mildenhall.

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at 20 Holywell Row with his parents; brothers Percy [5] and David J. [3]; sister Clara [8]. New siblings born in Mildenhall

His mother died in Q1-1901

1901 census...Aged 20, a market gardener, he was in Holywell Row with his widower father (market gardener); sister Clara and brother Percy (market gardener).

1911 census...Aged 30, a labourer, he was in Holywell Row with his father (a sawyer) and brother Percy (labourer). 4 of his siblings had died. Also there was housekeeper widow Naomi BUTCHER [61]


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
His "Soldiers Personal Effects" entry says he died at Canons Hospital in Thetford. The 2nd/6th Battalion, Essex Regiment were a second line unit which was stationed at Thetford from summer 1915 until July 1916. There is no medal index card for John Charles Stebbeds so the assumption is that he never served abroad.



John Stebbeds is buried in Beck Row (St John's) Churchyard, SW end of church
